Props to Tushar re: Opera Mini
Sometimes I read so much I end up missing the truly big news. To give you an idea of how my bizarre information gathering habit works, I just happened to check technorati to see who was linking to Sixty Phones (blogger ego gratification). I clicked through a couple and came to
Tushar Burman's blog. Apart from his
great photography on Flickr, I also found this key piece of news: Opera Mini was available in India. Smart guy that I am, I figured this meant it was available in the US as well.
Opera Mini is tremendous. Forget Netfront, plain Opera, Reqwireless, etc. This is the real deal. I've only been using this slimmed down version of Opera that reformats pages using their servers for mobiles for a half hour or so, but I'm convinced this is the thing that finally makes mobile browsing worthwhile. First of all, it's fast -- faster than Reqwireless which also reformatted pages for phones. The layout is great -- nice borders, beautifully rendered. The scroll function is awesome -- you don't lose your place on the small screen (which always made the experience subpar for me. And unlike Opera, it doesn't give you any funky low memory messages, a specialty of S60+Opera, at least in my experience. I highly recommend for anyone with a S60 phone.
